Realizing a
hydrogen society

~Beyond Energy :
"Making hydrogen easier
to use for a brighter future"~

Overview

We are now developing bottles capable of storing high-energy concentration
hydrogen even at room temperature and under low pressure,
in order to make it easier for general consumers to use hydrogen and promote a hydrogen society.

Social issues to resolve

Something must be done about the issue of global warming. If we do nothing, it is said that the average global temperature will rise 4°C by 2100.

We must act now to solve environmental issues so that our children, grandchildren, and future generates can inherit nature, and we must help to reduce greenhouse gases that affect global warming. These are the basic goals of this project. There are many ways to reduce greenhouse gases. One that has been attracting recent attention is hydrogen, which could be used as a clean energy source that does not generate CO2 when energy is extracted from it. There is hope that this could be widely used as an energy source 100 years from now. It is the mission of this project to tackle the issue of global warming through the use of clean hydrogen.

Future goal

Future goals

A society where general consumers can use hydrogen as a daily source of energy

The equivalent of around one trillion yen has been invested in the US and EU in using hydrogen as a clean energy source. The major trend worldwide is to establish hydrogen as a practical clean energy source in 2030, beginning with industrial applications. Once hydrogen becomes more attainable, the goal is for general consumers to begin using it. With this in mind, the goal of this project is to help realize a hydrogen society in which general consumers can regularly use hydrogen as a clean energy source, by the 2040s.

What is required

Development of bottles capable of storing high-energy concentration hydrogen even at room temperature and under low pressure

The bottles capable of storing high-energy concentration hydrogen even at room temperature and under low pressure

Hydrogen is a combustible gas and cannot be used effectively without conversion, making it difficult for general consumers to handle it easily. The first goal of this project is therefore to develop materials capable of storing high-energy concentration hydrogen even at room temperature and under low pressure. Our final goal is to use these materials to create bottles that allow hydrogen to be easily transported. We also believe that other efforts will be required, such as building infrastructure that increases the attainability of hydrogen, and developing fuel batteries that run on hydrogen.

We are currently developing materials capable of storing high-energy concentration hydrogen. Murata continues to apply the ceramic manufacturing processes and material design technologies we have developed over the years in order to develop new materials, by leveraging our expertise in ceramic technologies. Having set our development goals, we now plan to seek partners who can support us with new insight and technology with regard to gas, containers, and valves, and aim to start from the basics and ultimately develop bottles.
