SONAE Project

This ultra-long-term project aims to contribute
to the realization of an affluent society based on innovation
through collaboration and co-creation with partners
well into the society of the future in 2030 and beyond.

What is the SONAE Project?

In order to respond to a drastic change in the environment and to continuously increase the corporate value, Murata established Vision 2030 as the long-term direction that gives detailed guidance as to the necessary preparations while inheriting the fundamental principles from Vision 2025.

To realize “What Murata wants to be” set forth in Vision 2030, the “SONAE Project” has been launched as an ultra-long-term project that aims to contribute to the realization of an affluent society by means of collaboration and co-creation by Murata and stakeholders to bring about a virtuous cycle of social value and economic value through innovation.

The “SONAE Project” sets forth themes we should focus on to discover a wide range of possibilities, regardless of the conventional framework of markets, products, business structures, etc., and with a view toward the society of the 2030 and beyond.

At present, we are focusing on the four themes of “next-generation communication / 6G,” “optics&Semiconductor,” “the environment,” and “bioelectronics,” undertaking investigative searching, research and development, and commercialization efforts aimed at technologies for the society of the 2030 and beyond.

The four themes that are the focus of Vision 2030’s “What Murata wants to be” and the “SONAE Project”

Striving to remain an innovator in electronics. Murata innovation can contribute to the realization of an affluent society by bringing about a virtuous cycle of social value and economic value. At present, we are focusing on the four themes of “next-generation communication / 6G,” “optics&Semiconductor,” “the environment,” and “bioelectronics,” undertaking investigative searching, research and development, and commercialization efforts aimed at technologies for the society of the 2030 and beyond.

Collaboration and co-creation with stakeholders as part of the “SONAE Project”

The “SONAE Project” seeks involvement by partners with specialized experience, knowledge, and technology related to the individual projects.

Individual projects

Project.01Next-generation communication / 6G

To prepare for the future industry coming, we are trying to solve social issues by using innovative communication technologies.

While the implementation of 5G is spreading all over the world, many countries currently conduct research and development work of next-generation communication technology(6G). It is said that 6G will be commercialized around 2030. We are conducting long-term activity aiming for the time to come.

Specifically, we are engaged in joint research with organizations outside of the company and participation in industry groups to collect information and build connections. We are trying to make advancement of device technology, while also considering new areas, such as network systems and software.

Project.02Optics&Semiconductor

By linking electrical, Optics, and materials technology, we will contribute to the formation of bonds between people and ideas.

Alongside the next-generation communication standard (6G), a number of new terms and ideas, such as the metaverse and digital twins, have drawn attention to the area of digital technology. As the technology advances, and the volume of data involved continues to increase, data centers become ever more enormous and the speed and density of the communication infrastructure grow more and more. This makes finding ways to reduce power consumption a major focus.

In the hope that the information-communication society in 2030 and beyond will enable the realization of a society of the future in which people can live with greater freedom, Murata has established a theme “solving problems with innovative technology linking electricity, Optics, and materials” to be realized through co-creation by Murata and partners. We are currently seeking business opportunities and doing R&D work with this in mind.

Project.03The environment

We are moving forward with new business development and technology development aiming to make the most of the growing business opportunities brought about by the shift to carbon neutral and progress toward a circular economy.

There is a social trend toward the achievement of carbon neutrality in order to combat climate change. There is also progress toward the establishment of a circular economy that values the recycling of resources, taking into account both the exhaustion of natural resources and geopolitics. With solving environmental issues positioned as a growth strategy for various countries, linking such efforts to business in order to contribute to the realization of a sustainable society has become a key theme guiding the operations of many companies.

With problem-solving on a global scale as the target, Murata aims to contribute to the emergence of an affluent society brought about by a virtuous cycle of social value and economic value. To achieve this aim in the society of the future in 2030 and beyond, we are promoting co-creation with colleagues and stakeholders outside the company and endeavoring to create new businesses that will contribute to solving environmental issues in the market.

Project.04Bioelectronics

Transforming human lives with bioelectronics for better wellness.

2050 — A variety of devices connect our bodies with our minds, supporting people’s wellness. Murata creates scenarios using backcasting based on our vision of the future in the year 2050, imagining possible future challenges and environmental changes, and strives to find technologies and businesses to focus on in the medium and long term.

Video: Future scenario for the year 2050 (Three Worlds), short version

In four key areas in the bioelectronics project—“exceeding one’s body,” “exceeding one’s presence,” “exceeding the five senses,” and “exceeding one’s intelligence”—Murata is looking for new technological developments and business models through joint research with research institutions outside the company and participation in industry groups. We are seeking researchers with specialized experience, knowledge, or technology in these four areas (medicine, bioengineering, biological engineering, psychology, etc.) as well as collaboration and co-creation partners who wish to commercialize them. Please feel free to contact us if you are interested.

Technology intelligence

Tech Scouting & Technology Intelligence

To adapt to the long-term shifts in the business landscape, we are preparing for disruptive innovations and streamlining our business and technology offerings.

We gather and synthesize “market and technology intelligence” to monitor early signs of potential risks to existing business and identify new long-term opportunities.

We track technology trends and gather the latest market information to help us suggest new businesses and technologies that need preparation for our mid-term and long-term future. We seek and establish partnerships with external technology sources such as universities, corporations, startups, venture capital firms, and strive to develop new technologies that will be the source of future competitiveness.

The “SONAE Project” seeks involvement by partners with specialized experience, knowledge, and technology related to the individual projects.
