Murata launches child-resistant packaging for its lithium coin cell batteries available in 5-piece tear-strip package
Murata is transitioning to child-resistant packaging for all lithium coin cell batteries available in a 5-piece tear strip package, which includes the popular CR2016, CR2025 and CR2032 sizes.
Each coin cell battery in the 5-piece tear strip pack can still be easily detached. Each coin cell battery is fully encapsulated in plastic, replacing the conventional easy-to-open perforated packaging. Each capsule now requires a pair of scissors to open. Coin cells and packaging are also marked with the ‘keep away from small children’ symbol.
Although many reported coin cell ingestions have been connected with adults swallowing their hearing aid batteries, the most concerning cases involve children. Children, in particular, are vulnerable to ingesting lithium coin cell batteries. Swallowing a lithium battery can cause severe damage from burns if not treated within 2 hours and, in some cases, can prove fatal.
“Many consumer battery brands have already transitioned to child-resistant battery packaging which can be sold in drug stores, discount and grocery store chains in accordance with IEC60086 4 Edition 5 guidelines. However, repair technicians usually gravitate to tear-strip packaging since it generally costs less than individually carded packages. This type of packaging may end up as the final end consumer solution,” says Product Manager Micro Batteries, Murata. “All coin cell batteries should have child-resistant packaging, and we believe that this small step can help save lives.”
